This is a classic climb featured many times on the Tour de France. It’s also your introduction to the Jura mountain range !
You’ll leave Bike Switzerland and pass by the United Nations, International Red Cross and many diplomatic missions before reaching the French border where the city is quickly replaced by small villages and narrow country roads.
The real climbing of this col begins in Gex. It’s a gentle start, but the gradient increases during the 16km to the top.
Once the summit has been reached you can pause for refreshment at restaurant de la Couronne before a fun twisting run along the ridgeline brings you to a second border crossing in Le Cure.
We’re staying in France however as we head to the slightly shorter but much steeper Col du Marchairuz.
We recommend the bicycle-friendly restaurant in the Hotel du Marchairuz which has plenty of outdoor seating.
We then begin a very long descent that will test the nerves of seasoned riders before returning lakeside for the return to Geneva.
